Jannet Irving is an excellent beginner sampler and an authentic reproduction! The original 1836 work was stitched in cross stitch, Algerian eyelet, and the four-sided stitch.
This is a PDF download, not a printed chart. Be prepared to print 21 pages. The sampler is charted using a combination of color and symbols so it is important to print it in color.
Jannet Irving is special to my family. She was 17 when she stitched this sampler, most probably in Raeburnhead, Scotland. In 1851, she married George Farish and so she became the great-great-great grandmother of my daughters.
This design can be stitched on linen or Aida. It is a traditional Scottish band sampler. Just as Jannet stitched the initials of her family members, you can chart your own family's initials within the bands.
The sampler is 238 stitches across and 270 stitches down. The stitched area is approximately 17" x 20" when stitched on 14-count Aida or 28-count linen "over two." The dominant colors are reds and olive greens with a little grey, taupe and navy. The chart is easy to read. Stitch diagrams and instructions are included for the four-sided stitch and the Algerian Eyelet.
